Agroforestry
Tomorrow's Homestead
Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.
In partnership with Tomorrow’s Homestead in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, The Ahimsa Project helped introduce an agroforestry model to working agricultural land by planting more than 100 trees and shrubs.
The project incorporated a diverse mix of flowering, fruit, and nut trees, creating a landscape designed to support both food production and biodiversity. As the trees mature, the fruit and nuts they produce will be available to the farmers who work the land for personal use or sale, providing an additional source of food and potential income.
By integrating perennial trees and shrubs into farmland, the project demonstrates how agriculture can produce food while also creating habitat, supporting pollinators, improving ecological resilience, and giving back to the land.
Once established, the agroforestry area will be cared for and managed by the farmers who use the property, allowing the system to continue growing alongside the farm for years to come.

Project Benefits
This project was created to support local farmers and food-system development while strengthening the ecological health and resilience of agricultural land.
Agroforestry integrates trees and shrubs into agricultural systems, creating opportunities to produce food while supporting biodiversity, protecting soil and water, and building greater resilience to a changing climate. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) recognizes agroforestry as an important approach for creating more sustainable and resilient agricultural systems.
The larger vision for the site also explored opportunities to expand these practices through additional plantings and the establishment of a riparian buffer, helping protect waterways while creating additional habitat for wildlife and pollinators.
Special thanks to Saraswati and Kula Kamala Foundation & Yoga Ashram for their generous support of this project.
