Reforestation

Kula Kamala Foundation and Yoga Ashram

Berks County, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.

Our first project began in 2024 at Kula Kamala Foundation & Yoga Ashram in Pennsylvania, where The Ahimsa Project helped restore approximately half an acre of a former school ballfield.

Working alongside the ashram community and volunteers, we planted more than 100 trees and shrubs, beginning the transformation of the open field into a thriving green space. The project was designed to restore habitat, support biodiversity, and create a landscape that will continue to grow and benefit both people and the natural world for years to come.

Project Benefits

Even in their early years, the trees and shrubs planted through this project can begin providing important benefits to the surrounding community and ecosystem.

Based on the original project estimates, the plantings have the potential to:

  • Produce approximately 576 lbs of oxygen

  • Store approximately 216 lbs of carbon

  • Prevent approximately 5,944 gallons of water from evaporating

  • Provide natural cooling equivalent to roughly five air conditioners operating for 1,000 hours

The project prioritized native trees and plants, along with fruit- and nut-bearing species that can provide food and habitat for wildlife. As the plantings mature, some can also contribute food for the Kula Kamala Foundation's kitchens and support its food-donation efforts benefiting local food banks.

This project was designed not simply to plant trees, but to create a living landscape that can provide greater ecological and community benefits with each passing year.

We are grateful to Carrie, Yasho, Brenda, Ryan, David, Margaret, and Kamala for their generous support of this project.
